Pixels and Palaeoplushies

@palaeoplushies

My name is Bex! She/Her. I'm a self-employed plush maker and designer of scientifically accurate soft toy extinct creatures and obscure critters. I also try my hand at digital painting, sculpting and other arty things. On top of my own creations, I share lots of content related to whatever my interests are at the moment, as well as photos of my pet rats and my aquarium.

What is Palaeoplushies?

  • Palaeoplushies is a small business run by me, and my sister Sarah helps make things too! My website is www.palaeoplushies.com
  • We make soft toys/plushies of both extinct and living creatures. It’s a very broad subject matter, I know. It’s usually just animals that interest me (Bex)!
  • Plushies are made by hand in small batches- they sell out quickly! Designs usually return but there's no set schedule.
  • You can sign up for restock notifications for individual plushies on my website.
  • I cannot reserve plushies for people, take payment in advance or personally email/notify individuals when things restock.
  • We are a very small team. I handle all the product design, manufacture, customer service, paperwork, packaging + posting. Sarah does a lot of sewing too!
  • I try to get all orders fulfilled and posted within a 7 working days of the order being placed. Sometimes there might be delays, but I’m trying my best.
  • I'm based in the UK, and world events have meant that shipping is often slow/delayed by customs. This is out of my control, I'm really sorry!
  • Do I take commissions? No* *Unless it is for Sci-Comm work, in which case I would love to help you out! Got a model organism you'd like to show folks "in person"? I can do that!

I've never seen the Northern Lights before, and never thought I'd see it locally! It was a lot dimmer and less colourful to the naked eye but I could still see the shimmering curtain with hints of pink and green that slowly passed overhead.

These were taken on the evening of the 10th May 2024 from Central Scotland.

So what's like, the one creature you'd like to make into a plush more than anything, but circumstances (shape of animal, cost, complexity, busyness ect) haven't been right for it?

Avatar

I'm a tempremental, stubborn beast ruled by my own whims and the reason I got into plush making was to make the animals I wanted to make most! When I find a creature that really takes my fancy, expect to see a plush of it soon! When it comes to making things currently outwith my grasp, plushies aside, I would LOVE to get into complex puppetry, animatronics and more mechanical stuff. I'd really, really like to make a life-size faux taxidermy thylacine with a full armature with realistic range of motion, 3D printed skull and teeth. Stop motion puppets would be cool, too. I have a pose-able archaeopteryx art doll type thing in the works (it's been a WIP for years) I'd love to finish that one day, too.

i love your plushes so much!!! i'm on the waitlist for the coelacanth to return, last time they sold out before i could nab one. i just wondered if you had ever considered making a dunkleosteus plush? especially with the newly revised "chunkleosteus" appearance? i would buy one of those bad boys in a heartbeat!

Good news! Coelacanth are in the works, expect them within a month or so! As for the dunk, yesss it's literally been on my to-do list for years. There's just too many neat critters!!!

An entity found alone in the Far Plane. The entity seems to do nothing in its environment except exist. Its relationship with the plant-like organisms that grow around it is currently unknown.

I made a 1m long plushie baby Diplodocus!! This little (big) baby is up for sale on my website!

This was designed in conjunction with the University of Zurich who commissioned the first 30cm hatchling, this is a slightly older one!

I haven't done a new dinosaur in ages. Maybe this will mark a trend in a more saurian direction...

Is the younger one far different?

May we see pictures?

I love his coloration and the cute face ❤️

The little one is roughly the size of a 3 week old hatchling, it was commissioned by the University of Zurich for their new Natural History Museum.

The intention is that it will be used as an accessibility tool for visually impared people, the idea is that they will carry it around with them and be able to refer to it to help them understand the diplodocus exhibit (a lot of the text is in braille I believe). They hired an advisor and my plushies came out on top when it came to readability and were more "alive" than a 3D print (which was their original plan).

I really loved working on this and it made me think about another angle of plush-making and science outreach- I would love more commissions like this. I absolutely adore it when my work is used for scientific communication, you can fit so much information about an animal in a reconstruction like this and it's also VERY approachable- nobody is worried about breaking a plushie, they're fun and playful and tactile. I just love it!
