In the 1950s, Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to play at Hollywood’s most popular nightclub, Mocambo, because of her race. Marilyn Monroe, who was a big fan, called the owner and told him that if she booked Ella, Marilyn would be there every night β€” which guaranteed huge press coverage. He booked Ella, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night.
Ella said, β€œafter that, I never had to play at a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman β€” a little ahead of her time. And she didn’t know it.”

Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough

I wish men would decide if women are heavenly angels on high, or earthbound sculptures for their gardens. But either way, we're beauty for consumption.

In Rome in the year 1610, Artemisia grinds pigment for her father and secretly paints - beautiful portraits that all of the wealthy in Rome are in love with. The only problem is that no one knows that it is Artemisia doing the painting.

But after she is raped, Artemisia decides that she will live in the shadows no longer, choosing truth over silence.

He will not consume my every thought. I am a painter. I will paint. I will show you what a woman can do.

Unangax/Aleut hunter, Ivan Suvorov wearing a gut parka with a large harpoon, Umnak Island, Alaska in 1909.Β

The visor is called a Chagudax, and was worn when hunting on kayaks. It helped block sunlight (as well as light reflecting from snow) and was decorated to refer to social status.Β

Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance and I know we all have the same question: what can I do? Here are some ways that you can help protect reproductive rights for pregnant people in the U.S.

Donate to an Abortion Fund

Even $1 can be helpful if enough people donate. Don't ever think that your contribution won't be enough.

Share these Resources!

Abortion funds only work if people KNOW about them. Share these resources on social media, among your friends, at local colleges--anywhere where pregnant people who need help might be located. Find a protest/march/rally near you and GO

The best way to keep up to date on upcoming events like this is to follow organizations and community organizers whose goals align with yours on social media.

Write a letter to the editor of a local newspaper This might not seem like a big deal, but being vocal is important. Not everyone is tuned in or even online at all. Let people know that this is happening. Draw support through channels other than social media! Find newspapers local to you and then go to this link to learn how to write your letter today!

This is by no means an exhaustive list but at least it's a start.
