Arrow S5 Ratings: The Viewership Apocalypse

My level of obsessive compulsive nerd is that I continue to work on my Arrow ratings math project despite that fact that I only “meh watched” six episodes this season. I should be working on my dissertation or my revise and resubmit pile in my spare time but this remains way more fun. Plus after my Season 4 Model worked so well I had to see if I could duplicate it for Season 5.

Being right remains my heroin. #CapricornProblems

Arrow Season Five: The Beginning of the End

First, let’s review the Arrow S5 average ratings & demo + adjusted ratings & demo change since S4 season.

Everyone knows that Arrow ratings AND CW ratings have declined sharply this season overall (http://www.vulture.com/2017/05/2016-2017-tv-season-in-five-really-depressing-charts.html). This article and the CW chart in here are helpful to center the conversation but I have critiques. First, no fair comparison of ratings decline over last season can include Supergirl. Comparing ratings from CBS to CW is not Apples to Oranges it is Apples to Volkswagens. Thus I removed Supergirl from my chart. Second, for change over time comparisons the number of viewers is mathematically preferable to the demo.

Style over substance= A MG rant

Dear Marc,

First of all, I think it would be fairly accurate to say that most Olicity fans know the DNA of Arrow better than you and your writers room. Whenever Arrow has been at its strongest it was when the focus was on character. To clarify, the characters we care about. The core characters. I think it to be of no coincidence that the upturn in quality of these past few episodes sees a return focus on Oliver, John, and Felicity. When you force characters on your audience and we tell you we don’t care, that isn’t out of pettiness, or because we want our ship back, its because you failed to introduce and write for these new characters in a way that would invest our interest. When you sideline popular characters and fridge already established dynamics to shove the newbies down our throats, the backlash is to be expected.

This season Arrow reached its 100th episode. Something to be celebrated. Appreciation should be shown for the incredibly talented cast that you are lucky to have. Instead, you marginalise them, disrespect them publicly and give into the fringe element of the fandom.

New characters should have been introduced in a way that tied in and enhanced the storylines of the core cast. But instead you shoehorned them in and stuck the others in no mans land.

You waited too long to unveil Prometheus. Josh Segarra has been a revelation in the role so far, but I feel like we are running out of time with him. His reveal should have been earlier.

Susan Williams was a mistake. You repeatedly told us that she was a good person and that Oliver had “deep feelings” for her. This was never shown on screen. She was introduced as someone who was manipulative, conniving and just plain awful. Then you had her date Oliver even though she was investigating him, which was a huge conflict of interest. Then you spent more time on her job than you gave to Felicity’s Havenrock storyline, or John’s being in jail storyline. Then you turned Oliver into Ollie 2.0 by making him an unbelievable douche. Then when Susan was kidnapped, Oliver barely blinked. He showed no concern for her at all. WTF? Don’t get me wrong, that last part was hilarious, but what the hell were you thinking with this whole storyline?

Don’t even get me started on Billy.

No one is asking for a whole episode of Olicity going shopping. Even Felicity would probably hate that. What we want is Olicity together in a healthy, happy, normal relationship. No baby mama drama, no bullshit love interests. No tropes. Just let them be together. Let them figure out how to be together and work together. Let them talk to each other. Be there for each other. Let them deal with any issues like adults. You can still have explosions, and stunts and action. You did it before. Its called 4A, remember the ratings back then?

Now, I know this isn’t about ratings. I get that. What it is about is writing to your shows strengths. Stephen Amell, Emily Bett Rickard, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne. They are what this show was built on. Not your ego. So get over yourself.

One last thing, cutting the season shorter won’t solve Arrows problem. Getting better writers will. The fact that you actually said that cutting the season would reduce the number of “filler” episodes just proves this. Why don’t you use these “filler” episodes to focus on your incredibly talented cast. Instead of another villain of the week or gun PSA, write your own “Zeppo” episode.

Or maybe after 5 years, its time for you to go. Bring in some fresh ideas.

All of this!

Y'all better hope MTV doesn’t nominate olicity for SOTY 2017 because by then there ain’t gonna be no olicity fandom at this going rate

Yes. And it wouldn’t be the show, the EPs, the cast or the writers who ruined this fandom. Because a fandom can persist without canon to back it up. I was a part of the Doctor/Rose fandom WELL after canon had left that particular pairing behind. What a fandom cannot exist without is the community, the people who ship the thing regardless of what canon has done with it, regardless what some stupid interview says. Fandom needs art, gifs, meta, passion and presence. It needs fic writers and fanfics and readers to read those fics and comment on them and share them

Right now? The Olicity fandom is circling the drain. Because they’ve let the stuff that does not matter to the heart of this fandom tear them apart. We couldn’t win SOTY now and it’s NOT because Olicity isn’t together or because Stephen said this or that or because the writers have ruined the character or because WM gave another incendiary interview. It’s because the fandom gave up on the ship.

When the going got tough, the fandom got going. It’s not just sad, it’s disappointing.

If a show isn’t giving people excitement to do those things then u don’t have a fandom and it clearly goes back to the writers and ep’s who are discouraging their fans and makes them not want to be engaged stop blaming people who are upset and have every right to be upset with writers who are treating their fans like shit esp marc? but idk if you understand bc ur the same person who defended marc when he was being an asshole to someone who was complaining about the lack of diversity on the show lmao

….I’m tired of this pushover behavior against any one who is discouraged or doesn’t have the energy they used to. Sorry but I’ve seen what happens when writers give a fandom nothing and they overstay their welcome. It translates to rabidity and insanity and violence *cough*LLfandom*cough* and I’m sorry but I don’t want to be like that fandom. It’s the same behavior and same mentality. This kind of response weirdly reminds me of victim blaming or shaming and idk why but shutting down anyone’s discouragement and in turn indirectly inferring that it’s the person’s fault and not the VISIBLE deterioration in quality of a show and it’s characters and the degrading behavior from the writers and EPs and occasionally the cast. I just……wtf. The fandom has sputtering fuel to run on. This isn’t the Ten x Rose fandom or the Buffy x Angel fandom (since I see ppl use that fandom as an example of “persistence”). This is the olicity fandom. It’s a different generation and a different formation. It’s not the same people or mentality. I appreciate the abstract concept of what you’re trying to do @callistawolf but the execution makes me uncomfortable and frustrates me. No one is allowed any free thought w/o someone hijacking a post, shutting down legitimate feelings and then blaming the person for their feelings as if we all are not watching the same show or invested in these characters, and then sprinkling positivity over it with so much condescension. That reeks of selfishness rather than concern for others. I don’t like that at all. I wish y'all would stop doing that because it’s not needed especially if you dismiss legitimate concerns and feelings. People are beaten and downtrodden and dwindling out and it’s not any one’s fault but the Arrow prod team and the stuff Arrow has been putting out, not to mention the minor yet uproarious and violent bullies that from a perspective note have influential standing based on how the Arrow team has obviously responded by catering to them in the most obvious ways possible. Be 110% honest for once please. This is not the fandom’s fault. That is not how this works at all! You cannot have a fandom if you don’t have fans. And you cannot have fans if people don’t like what you’re putting out. That’s how it has always worked. Not the other way around.

Trevor Noah just conducted one of his most impressive interviews to date, with one of his most controversial guests. Tomi Lahren, a video host on Glenn Beck’s website The Blaze, stopped by the Daily Show for a conversation that spanned from the Black Lives Matter movement to illegal immigration, and the resulting interview is a must-watch for anyone seeking out reason.

“Rob: Just stop with love triangles, writers. You know what, come here. We’re gonna have a moment. Unless you really know how to do a love triangle right, just don’t do it it’s okay! You can have two people in love.

Doug: Love, I don’t think writers understand, is actually an interesting thing just between two people. It’s okay! You can write that! And you can make it interesting ‘cause it’s pretty interesting in real life too.

Rob: Just, enough with love triangles.”

My Tumblr and Twitter Timelines on Arrow 501

One post would be: OMG. Arrow is back! And it´s awesome!!!
Next post: Meh. The stunts were good. But Diggle needs to be in the show. Also, why is Felicity being sidelined again?
Then the next one: Love, love, love the palpable Olicity chemistry! Still behaving like an old married couple even if they are not together -- Love it! Olicity is so endgame.
Next: Olicity is NOT endgame. WM said that they are writing away from romance between the characters. I´m done with this shit.
Then: Endgame or not the Olicity chemistry is for realz.
Then: New BF is ugly. Why is he in the loft? How dare he touch Felicity´s shoulders? What is his purpose? OMG Olicity is over.
And: New BF is harmless. He´s either corrupt or will die soon. He doesn´t matter. Olicity is endgame, folks!
Then: Buckles is pathetic.
Then: She´s what? Saint Buckles now? Stop retconning her!
Next one: Why is she still in the show? Just kill her already! For good!
Then: Oliver Queen is howt.
Next: In leather.
Next: In a suit.
Then: In the flashback, shirtless.
Then: All day, every day.
Next one: #Quiggle #BroTP #4Ever!
Me: My thoughts exactly. All of them. I´ll give 502 a go.
Me: Also, I am following the right people.
