every night I put on the audiobook of stephen fry's Heroes to fall asleep to and every night I lie in bed wondering abt the context the stories were originally told in and what they meant to the people who heard them

like, surface-level the story of oedipus is already interesting and ironic and tragic, it's a good story just on the face of it, but was it also told to emphasize that you should Listen To The Seers And Prophets Or Else? "you can be strong and smart and royalty but you don't know best, THE GODS know best"--maintaining social order type of story. anti-intellectualism question mark? and there are so many characters who ARE royalty. what's up with that? propaganda? just being in the public eye? fantasies of subjects imagining the crazy lives of the rich and powerful? I need to read books and/or take a college class lmao I have no idea how many answers we have abt this stuff
