AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.

Here are the important details:

• We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner. 
• We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
• To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option. 
• For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc. 
• Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.

In the spirit of how we’ve all come to communicate the news here on Tumblr dot com, here’s this: As of today, January 24, 2024, Tumblr Live no longer exists.

What does this mean?

The Tumblr Live marquee will no longer appear at the top of your dashboards, the Live icon will be removed, and the snooze option will disappear from your settings. You will no longer be able to go live or watch streams.

Hello, Tumblr. This is a badges update.

Just popping in to tell you about all the nifty badges you can get to decorate your blog these days. You, too, could be the proud owner of The President’s Shoelaces (authentic, we promise), the Rainbow Crab, or the extra special Supporter Badge subscription that changes color as your support progresses. Here’s a full list of all the shiny knickknacks you can currently purchase from TumblrMart:

• Supporter badge: This is the big one. This is how you support Tumblr in an ongoing fashion. This badge changes color the longer you subscribe to support Tumblr, starting off with Steel and working towards a very shiny Oil Slick, which demonstrates you’ve reached the highest level of support for this lovely little corner of the internet you call home. • Visionary, Literary, Shutterbug, Playlist, and Fashionista identity badges: We have a whole host of badges you can pin to your blog, leaving no one in the dark about your main passions. Are you an artist, a writer or reader, a photographer, a musician, or a style icon? Is your blog a curation of all your favorite art, writing, photography, music, or fashion? Then there’s a badge here for you! 
• The Color of the Sky: That old meme that curses your dash now and again? Yeah, you can now wear it on your blog to show off your mischievous side all year round. 
• The President’s Shoelaces: For when you want people to know you Know.
• Crabs: Regular or Rainbow, you choose. Just know that crabs are something of a Tumblr mascot now, and wearing them on your blog shows that you either  (1) love crabs, (2) participated in crab day on Tumblr on July 29, 2023, or (3) know what to do when the news goes November 5, 2020 on you. 
• Lunar badge: For all those who love the moon or simply need to know when they might not be sleeping well, this badge changes throughout the lunar cycle.
• Important Babylonian Checkmark: Show your solidarity with disgruntled customers throughout time and space with the help of this extra special checkmark.
• Hewie and Bones Halloween badges: Celebrate Tumblr’s national holiday in style. The Hewie and Bones badges bring that special Halloween feeling to your blog year-round.

Post+ is going away in January 2024.

We originally introduced Post+ to uplift and support the vast swathes of incredible creators here on Tumblr. It was intended as a way for creators to offer content to their followers in a paid subscription format. 

Well, it didn’t land as we’d hoped. We’ve heard your feedback and monitored usage, and after much consideration, we’ve decided to remove Post+ from Tumblr.

Here’s the timeline:

• As of December 1, 2023, you will no longer be able to enable Post+ on your blogs. 
• Existing Post+ content will remain accessible through the end of this year. 
• In early 2024, we’ll remove the ability to create new Post+ content, and existing Post+ content will be marked as private. From then on, it’ll be up to each creator to determine whether they want to make those posts public.
• Subscribers will no longer be billed starting January 2024. If you subscribed using In-App Purchase from an iOS device, you’ll need to cancel your subscription manually to avoid being charged.

And, while Post+ is going away, Tipping is here to stay. You can enable Tipping via your Blog Settings on web (Account Settings on mobile). Once a blog has Tipping enabled, any original post can receive a Tip, with the money going directly to the creator. 

A wild update appears

Oh hello! You asked for the ability to reply to posts from your secondary blogs. This post exists to tell you that we’ve made it possible for you to reply to posts from your secondary blogs. That is all. 

Just kidding. Some benefits of this:

• You can now reply to a post from your hyper-specific fandom secondary.
• You can now keep the conversation going without reblogging the same post over and over again.
• Your primary will remain hidden so you can communicate on posts from your secondary blog as if you were replying from a primary blog. Neat!

How do you do this, you might ask. On web and mobile, when you go to reply to a post, simply click or tap on your avatar, and select your secondary blog of choice from the list that appears.

Tumblr Supporter badge: Show your loyalty with Pizazz

Many of you have asked for a way of supporting Tumblr that works like regular donations. Well, this is that, with a little whimsy thrown in for good measure. Imagine. A badge that gets shinier and shinier with your continued support—and helps Tumblr stay Tumblr. 

Enter the Tumblr Supporter badge. Part of a move towards a more user-led business model, this is a new auto-renewable subscription that allows you to wear your support of Tumblr in style. 

How it works:

The Tumblr Supporter badge is a special badge that works like a recurring donation subscription service. As a supporter, you get a specially designed badge based on how long you have been supporting Tumblr in this way. Your supporter badge will evolve from Steel to Copper, Gold, Platinum, and, eventually, Oil Slick. As your support continues, you will collect these badges at each milestone, to be displayed as you choose on any of your blogs.  

There are two subscriptions, monthly and yearly: 

• Monthly: Start at Steel and progress through the different badges at each milestone, eventually reaching the coveted Oil Slick.
• Yearly: Start at Platinum (it’s like you’ve jumped ahead a year. Look at you, cheating time). You’ll progress straight to Oil Slick at your next payment milestone after a year.

Pricing:

• Tumblr Supporter Monthly: $2.99
• Tumblr Supporter 3 Months: $7.99 ($1 OFF)
• Tumblr Supporter 6 Months: $15.99 ($2 OFF)
• Tumblr Supporter Yearly: $29.99 (15% OFF)

More details:

• This monthly or yearly subscription will renew automatically at each interval unless you choose to cancel. 
• If you cancel your subscription or a payment fails, you’ll still have your badge, but it won’t show up unless/until you restart your subscription. If/when you do so, you’ll pick up right from the badge level you were at when you ended your subscription.
• This is currently being rolled out for mobile and web in English. We’ll be rolling out to other territories in the coming weeks.

Hello, Tumblr. Tumblr here. We’re launching live streaming on Tumblr, and we’re calling it…well, Tumblr Live.

Tumblr Live brings streaming directly to the dashboard, meaning your Tumblr audience and your streaming audience can converge. What’s that, you say? Synergy? Beautiful.

Initially, we’re rolling Tumblr Live out to the US only via our Android and iOS apps. Desktop and international streaming and viewing will follow in time.

Here’s how it works:

• The little 🎥 at the bottom of your dashboard in your mobile app will take you to a Tumblr Live tab, where you’ll be able to scroll through streams that are live at that time—indicated by a green dot. (Your search bar is still there! It now lives in the top right corner of your screen.)
• As long as you keep it clean, you can stream anything that takes your fancy by tapping the “Go Live!” button—ducks in the park, the wonky snowman you built, your cursed cross stitch, etc.
• Streaming works with both front and back cameras, so if you’re camera-shy, you can stream without showing your face. 
• You can bestow bouncer status upon your most trusted and loyal viewers, which means they can help you moderate your stream for any nasties while you’re live.
• You can tap on any live avatar to jump into their stream—whether you follow that blog or not.
• You can send little gifts to the streamer during their stream if you’re enjoying what they’re up to.
• You can collect your favorite streamers in a special tab for later.

Hello, Tumblr. This is a badges update.

You may have noticed that we’ve launched a set of badges you can earn for your blogs through your actions on Tumblr—like the Top Poster Club, the Blazer, and the Generous Citizen. You’ll automatically earn (and be able to choose to display) these badges. If you’ve earned a badge, you’ll see it bubble up in the lower left corner of your dash:

You can now also display different purchased and earned badges in one row next to your blog name, in whatever order you like. Pick which order you like them in. Mix and match with your checkmarks. Or wear all your bling at once. Your call!

Here’s what that looks like:

• To manage your badges on web, click the account icon, select a blog from the drop-down, and click “Blog Settings” from the menu. Click on the little pencil under your blog name to add, edit, or hide badges and checkmarks.
• On mobile, head to your blog, click on the little paint palette in the top right corner, and you’ll see the little pencil icon under your blog name. Click on the little pencil under your blog name to add, edit, or hide badges and checkmarks.
• Watch as they magically appear next to your username on the dash and your blog view.
• You can always choose not to show any badges—simply unselect them in the very same “Badges” view in your settings.
• It’s worth noting that some of the badges you can earn will only work on your primary, like the Generous Citizen, because you can only gift from your primary.
• To purchase a badge, head to the Tumblrmart icon and select “Badges” from the menu at the top.

There you go. Now everyone can see who you are on Tumblr! At a glance! Nifty.

Artists’ Blazeathon

Have you recently finished a piece you’re particularly proud of? Got a work in progress you want more eyes on? Or found some old fanart you just need to share with the wider Tumblr plaza? Well then, expand your audience and light up Tumblr with your original (fan)art! 

If you Blaze a photo (or video, or GIF) of your original (fan)art on Saturday, June 24, the photo (or video, or GIF) of your original (fan)art will receive double the number of impressions you select. That’s double the amount of human eyes on your original (fan)art. Just imagine what van Gogh would have done with all those eyes 👀

Some stipulations:

• Yes, this means fanart is entirely allowed. Desired, even.
• It has to be your own original (fan)art, your own photo (or video, or GIF), please. If you try to ignite anything that is copyrighted, we will not be able to accept it for Blaze purposes.
• This offer may return. It may never occur again. What will you do with this great ephemeral power?

Tumblr Domains: That thing you do in the place they already know

Hello, [tumblr]. Look at you all here vibing. Some of you are out here providing essential services, like making art—and people happy in the process. Maybe you’re creating pfps for your followers. Or painting people’s OCs in intricate and enlightening detail. Or taking beautiful pictures of mushrooms. Or sharing your homestead life with the world. • Click on your account icon and select “Domains” from the drop-down.
• Register your info, pop in your payment details, and hey presto. You’re now an official Tumblr citizen. 
• If you already have a custom domain purchased elsewhere, it’ll continue to work for now, but you will no longer be able to connect a new custom domain bought elsewhere to your blog.
• Eventually, we will implement domain transfers (outbound and inbound) and paid domain connection.

And, to celebrate this historic moment, we’ve got a little offer for those interested in a .blog domain:
